¶ 01 Hon. Presiding Member, our Opposition MP from the region mentioned the forest clearing at Nedunkeni, Vedi-vaiththakal (Trivaiththakulam). This is indeed a grave incident. Following public complaints, I personally visited with the Pradeshiya Sabha member, members of the public, and about ten police officers from Bogaswewa Police. It was dense forest—illegally cleared. I estimate about 40 acres have been cleared. This is within Mahaweli “L” Zone lands.

¶ 02 I contacted the Mahaweli “L” Zone officer, who said they had received complaints and inspected the site. Today, “A” reports have been filed in court against the suspects. I also spoke to the Forest Department officer; the Department did not grant any permission, nor did any state agency. From what I have learned, a group led by a former Pradeshiya Sabha member of the past government is behind this. No one can authorize such destruction. The Government will take legal action; investigations are underway. I have submitted my field report today to the Minister and the Deputy Minister in charge of Forest Resources and Irrigation; instructions have been issued to the relevant agencies. We will ensure court action and prevent recurrence.

¶ 04 Please, 30 seconds. Because large vehicles cannot access the area, we went by motorbike and then walked almost four kilometers to inspect fully. The Government will not hesitate to act against those responsible, and we will remain vigilant on such matters.
