¶ 01 Hon. Speaker, please allow me to inform you and the House about an urgent matter.

¶ 02 The killing that took place yesterday on court premises has created an insecure situation not only for the courts but for society at large. It is a serious impact on national security.

¶ 03 I am informed that while some security has been provided to Judges performing heavy judicial functions, in recent times written notices have been issued that security provided to judicial officers is being withdrawn. I raise this as there is serious insecurity not only for civil society but also for journalists. Journalists report on these critical issues and face risks in doing so. I draw your attention to this. Although certain media personnel such as Chamuditha received protection by order, I am informed that security has been withdrawn from him as well.

¶ 04 Hon. Speaker, we need to ensure the security of judges, civil society, the media—indeed the security of all people. Yesterday’s incident is extremely serious and requires a special investigation and firm action.

¶ 05 Also, the responsibility for the security of Members of Parliament as public representatives lies with you as their guardian. I request you to take steps accordingly.

¶ 06 If the judicial system collapses, society collapses. Do not withdraw security provided to judges; that is wrong. Strengthen public security and ensure the safety of media personnel including Chamuditha, and guarantee MPs’ security. Prioritize and strengthen public security and also ensure the security of people’s representatives.

¶ 07 We have heard boasts about giving lessons on national security—“bring the table and chair”—and claims like “we will finish drug dealers in two days.” You have prioritized national security in words; I plead on behalf of the people to act accordingly.
