¶ 01 Hon. Deputy Chair, first I thank the Hon. Minister of Transport and the Hon. Leader of the House. I wasn’t here earlier as I was at a wedding to sign as a witness. The Minister requested me to contribute my knowledge on transport; I am happy to help freely—no vehicles or salaries needed.

¶ 02 When the State Minister spoke, I wondered if he was in the Opposition—he candidly set out the shortcomings of the transport system. He has clearly studied the issues.

¶ 03 Let’s be constructive. In Kalutara, five depots operate buses, but not even a jack is available to lift a bus and inspect underneath; there’s no proper washing, servicing, or oil change facilities. For years, buses have run under such shortages. I do not say this to ridicule, but to highlight reality. Often, when an SLTB bus and a private bus are together on the road, passengers switch to the private bus, because private buses provide better amenities. Why can’t SLTB provide similar facilities and be revived?

¶ 04 First, buses need extra cash flow. I also acknowledge that the current Government has done some good. I have been in politics long and judge beyond party lines.
