¶ 01 You are correct. Even obtaining 4,500 kg is difficult; it requires great effort — even reaching that level is hard. But there are countries getting multiple times our yield. We must reach that level. You may recall you once said, “Rice cultivation in Sri Lanka is not worthwhile; better to import rice.” Our answer is different. If we go down that path, we will be compelled to import at the quantities others dictate. Therefore, we must increase our production.

¶ 02 Accordingly, after testing soils, we are setting out to apply potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen in a manner suited to each soil and crop. We have initiated a soil testing programme, and inputs including fertilizer will then be provided in a coordinated manner. We must also supply quality seed. We have already begun that process. We are focusing on preparing fields to adopt new technology, timely cultivation, and improving the technical environment so we can raise yields. The Ministry of Agriculture has a plan in place and is advancing this work. In a few seasons, we will increase per-acre yields and uplift our agricultural sector. We have the vision and programme to do so.
