The Hon. Sundaralingam Pradeep - Deputy Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure

¶ 01 Hon. Presiding Member, at this time when the nation is in sorrow, I extend my deepest condolences to those who lost their lives and to the bereaved families. This cyclone inflicted massive, unexpected damage. Many lost their lives in their sleep.

¶ 02 I visited many affected districts and saw people in severe distress. First, I thank the Police and public officials serving day and night, and the Tri‑Forces. Many foreign countries and non‑governmental organizations have extended assistance; we thank them.

¶ 03 Ours is a humane nation. Whatever our differences, in crisis people unite beyond race, religion, and language to help. Especially our hill‑country communities suffered greatly. Often multiple families live in a single house, and even with early warnings they have nowhere safe to relocate. They ask: where can we go? Therefore, beyond temporary shelters during disasters, we must give permanent solutions—safe housing or land. People say, “Even if you don’t build us a house, give us land.” Allocating safe estates/lands in plantation areas is essential.

¶ 04 While some in the Opposition try to do politics over bodies, we must cooperate to take forward the Government’s good measures. Whatever others think or do, like the phoenix our country will rise again soon.

¶ 05 We are undertaking various measures through the Ministry. Next year we will implement multiple housing and infrastructure projects. Leaders and well‑wishers from around the world have come forward to help; we thank them and assure we will emerge stronger.
