¶ 01 How are we going to protect the farmer is something we must be mindful about.

¶ 02 In fact, Hon. Speaker, the Hon. Member also mentioned at the outset the tax policy relating to potatoes. In the past period—prior to 2023—the duty on imported potatoes in this country was Rs. 20 per kilogram. However, the then Government increased that duty to Rs. 50 on 2023.03.08. Thereafter, considering production costs, after our Government assumed office, on 2024.10.02 we increased that duty by a further Rs. 10 to Rs. 60.

¶ 03 We still believe that the cost of production of potatoes in our country is high. Therefore, steps must be taken to reduce it. In the coming years, we must provide new technology, new seed varieties, and new knowledge to reduce the production cost of our potato farmers. To that end, even now the Departments of Agriculture of the Uva and Central Provinces are educating farmers; providing equipment under subsidy schemes; and providing improved seed. We have embarked on such processes.

¶ 04 Hon. Speaker, this Budget presented is the first Budget of the present Government. However, we are striving to revive our agriculture industry which has been broken down for 76 years as mentioned. We intend, in 2026, 2027, and 2028, to move away from outdated technology and bring in the world’s new technology, introduce new seed varieties, provide farmers with necessary transport facilities, provide the necessary storage facilities, and intervene not only for potatoes but for all products to uplift production. I wish to inform this Hon. House of that.
