The Hon. K. Ilangkumaran

¶ 01 Hon. Presiding Member, I join the condolence on the late Hon. Mavai S. Senathirajah. Born in Maviddapuram, he entered politics young, striving to unite Tamils and find a just solution to the national question. He joined TULF youth in 1962, worked with many leaders even during war times, and treated everyone with kindness and humility. He told me he had spent years in prison alongside Sinhala friends, including with the founder of the JVP, reflecting his non-violent political path and dignified conduct.

¶ 02 He first entered Parliament via National List in 1989, then was elected in 2000. As a schoolboy in 2001, I learned of him after a heinous attack in the Islands area during his campaign: two were killed and he suffered serious head injury, reportedly by EPDP assailants; cases ensued and attackers went into hiding. Despite dangers, he campaigned fearlessly. At 82 he passed away. We need leaders of his calibre again. I visited him many times, sometimes with Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar; he would patiently explain politics and remained firm that some political power-sharing should be achieved for the Tamil people. I pay my respects and thank you for the opportunity.
