The Hon. (Mrs.) Oshani Umanga

¶ 01 Hon. Deputy Chairperson of Committees, as a Member representing the Horana Seat in the Kalutara District, I take this opportunity to express condolences on the passing of several former Members of Parliament, in particular Hon. Indradasa Hettiarachchi, who was elected from Horana to the National State Assembly in 1977 representing the United National Party and later served as a Member of Parliament, rendering service to his district and the country.

¶ 02 His story begins on 16 October 1927 in Pokunuwita, Horana. Born to Don Fredrick Hettiarachchi, a planter, and Kalubowilage Don Mary Nona Gunathilaka, he learned the value of the soil under his parents’ guidance. He started schooling at Kulupona Vidyalaya, then studied at Ananda College, Colombo. He possessed not only knowledge but also the ability to understand the heartbeat of the people and to give voice to them.

¶ 03 Following his father’s footsteps, the young Indradasa trained in plantation, but his destiny was larger—public service. Step by step, beginning as a member of the Kumbukpitiya Village Council, he became an esteemed leader and long-serving Chairman through his capability and honesty. His path to Parliament was not easy; he lost elections in 1960, 1965, and 1970 amid political storms. But his determination never faltered. He strove to win people’s hearts through overcoming challenges and, accordingly, won the 1977 General Election with 27,188 votes, capturing Horana. It was not merely an electoral victory but an opportunity to fulfill the aspirations of the people of Horana.

¶ 04 He accepted ministerial office not to enjoy power but to bring new light to the lives of people in Kalutara District including Horana. He was not just a politician of his time; he lives forever in the hearts of the people of Horana. His dedication and foresight are an example to us all. He bade farewell to us on 11 January 2025 at the age of 96.

¶ 05 His name, service, and the dreams he built will remain forever in Horana. He was of a statesmanlike character found in leaders of earlier decades. I recall speaking with him during the last election period; he blessed my political journey. It is a privilege to speak about him today.

¶ 06 Having served about 16 years as an MP, he passed away. I pray that he attains the supreme bliss of Nibbana and, with respect, convey the condolences of this august Assembly to his children and family.
