¶ 01 Hon. Speaker, I thank the Hon. Leader of the Opposition for his sentiments.

¶ 02 As this calamity escalated, the Hon. President intervened, and we have been engaging all party leaders, Government and Opposition. Yesterday morning’s discussion chaired by the Hon. President included Members across the aisle. Last night’s National Disaster Council, attended by the Hon. President and Hon. Prime Minister, was also joined by the Hon. Leader of the Opposition. Today at 10.00 a.m., at the Ministry of Defence, another discussion chaired by the Hon. President with all party leaders represented in this Parliament will be held. Some Opposition party leaders could not attend yesterday; our aim is to involve all and rescue our people as quickly as possible.

¶ 03 Rescue operations to save lives are underway; relief operations are being carried out; and measures to safeguard public health are being implemented. All District Secretaries have already been provided with the required initial funds as of yesterday. If more funds are requested, we are ready to provide them.

¶ 04 The Navy has prepared vessels and boats where necessary, and where naval craft are insufficient, District Secretaries and Disaster Management officials have been informed that private craft may be hired and funds will be provided.

¶ 05 Regarding electricity, there are outages as stated. The CEB is working under difficult and risky conditions to restore supply and has resolved many issues already. We will conclude today’s business expeditiously so that today, tomorrow and the day after, Members can return to their electorates and assist the relief operations, coordinating with State machinery and local authorities. Our paramount objective must be to save the maximum number of lives and to provide swift relief to all who are displaced, stranded or otherwise affected. We must face this calamity united as a country. We thank Members for their cooperation.
