Mr. Speaker - The Hon. (Dr.) Jagath Wickramaratne
Parliament was informed of the Supreme Court’s decision on petitions challenging the Protection of Occupants Bill and the Rent (Repeal) Bill under Article 121(1) of the Constitution. The Court made no formal determinations because the Attorney-General gave an undertaking that the Bills would not proceed in their present form, would be referred to an expert committee, and may later be presented as new Bills, leading to withdrawal or non-continuation of the petitions. The Speaker also noted that a privilege matter raised by Hon. MP Riyas Farook regarding an alleged threat by the Vice Chairman of the Akurana Pradeshiya Sabha may be referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
