¶ 01 Hon. Deputy Speaker, the answer is as follows.

¶ 02 (a) (i) A maximum retail price (MRP) is in force for rice in the market. Compliance is monitored by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA). Prices for imported and local rice are as set out under (iv).

¶ 03 (ii) Yes. In the past month there was an artificial and abnormal increase in rice prices. The Ministry, together with the CAA, took several steps to reduce prices: - By Gazette Extraordinary Nos. 2414/02 and 2414/04 of 09.12.2024, the CAA imposed MRPs and maximum wholesale prices for local and imported rice. - Both public and private sectors were enabled to import rice. - Following discussions with millers chaired by H.E. the President, Lanka Sathosa was directed to release specified quantities of rice daily to co-ops and the open market.

¶ 04 (iii) An MRP has been introduced for rice by the CAA. The relevant Gazettes are annexed. Placed in the Library.

¶ 05 (iv) Current MRPs (Rs. per kg): - Imported: Kakulu 210; Nadu 220; Samba 230 - Local: Kakulu – Wholesale max 220 / Retail max 230; Nadu – Wholesale 230 / Retail 240; Samba – Wholesale 240 / Retail 250; Keeri Samba – Wholesale 255 / Retail 260

¶ 06 (b) (i) Yes. For the 2024–2025 Maha season harvest, the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) is purchasing paddy to build a Government buffer stock in Government stores, in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation and Lanka Sathosa.

¶ 07 Accordingly, data on Government paddy stores is being compiled, stores are being repaired, and suitable storage is being prepared.

¶ 08 (ii) The PMB has commenced purchases and funds have been allocated. Sathosa has joined the purchasing process.

¶ 09 (iii) Does not arise.

¶ 10 (c) Does not arise.
