Mr. Speaker

¶ 01 Honourable Members, in order to proceed with the business as planned today, I believe two congratulatory speeches are sufficient.

¶ 02 Honourable Members, I express my heartfelt respect and gratitude to all of you for electing me as the Speaker of this Tenth Parliament. I also appreciate the congratulations extended by the leaders of political parties on my election.

¶ 03 I salute the confidence reposed in me by both the Government and the Opposition.

¶ 04 As the apex institution of our country, I will safeguard, to the utmost, the independence and dignity of Parliament and protect the rights of all Members. I pledge to discharge the duties of the Speakership honestly and efficiently, with my fullest strength.

¶ 05 As the Legislature, we shall be guided by the provisions of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, the Standing Orders, the rulings of previous Speakers, and parliamentary traditions and practices. With your cooperation and active participation, we will strive to build a model Parliament.

¶ 06 Our people expect a new political culture. I will work to make legislative processes more effective and meaningful, aligning the core functions of this House with the aspirations of our citizens.

¶ 07 The committee system, which plays a crucial role in the legislative process, must be made more orderly and systematic. I trust you will render your active cooperation. I also request that during sittings and committee work, Members act with exemplary parliamentary decorum and provide effective contributions so that we can bring about the positive changes our people desire and build an exemplary Parliament.

¶ 08 As you know, the people have afforded us an unprecedented opportunity. Let us, united and courageous, without partisan divisions, work for one Sri Lanka to fulfill the people’s expectations at this challenging moment. Through the Legislature, may we achieve our desired national goals. I wish you all strength and courage.
